Dealing with Maternal Mental Health Challenges

Becoming a mother is a profound journey, but it’s not always a straightforward one. Maternal mental health challenges can cast shadows on what we hope to be a joyous experience. From the moment you learn of your pregnancy, through sleepless nights and tender baby cuddles, it’s okay to acknowledge that not every day feels like a picture-perfect moment.

Maternal mental health challenges can arise during your pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and well into your years of motherhood. For some, it can be intrusive thoughts about your baby’s health during pregnancy, experiencing a birth that was traumatic to your body and soul, a lack of connection with your newborn child, or a loss of identity as you navigate sacrificing your time and self to raising children.

For some, this dream of motherhood has not been realized. Dealing with infertility and infant loss brings a tidal wave of emotions that can be overwhelming and isolating. The ache of unmet expectations or the silent grief of a lost dream can sometimes feel too much to bear. We want to help you seek support, share your pain, and find healing.

Treating Maternal Mental Health Challenges

Our specialized approach to treating maternal mental health challenges is rooted in empathy and understanding. As mothers and women ourselves, we understand how your mental health impacts almost every aspect of your life and we want to help. We work to provide a safe space for women to express their thoughts and feelings without judgment. In therapy, you will learn skills for coping with unhelpful and intrusive thoughts. We will work to help you build up a sense of worth and identity that is not based on having or not having children. You may need to engage in trauma work to help navigate experiences that have caused distress and formed unhelpful beliefs about yourself.

You will learn how to be compassionate with yourself and accept yourself wherever you are on your journey. Together we will navigate the challenges you are facing, celebrate the triumphs, and support the path to wholeness and fulfillment.
