Dealing with Trauma

Life’s journey is marked by unexpected events and experiences. Sometimes those experiences can leave lasting marks on our heart, mind, and body. Trauma can have many faces – from the loss of a loved one to the distressing event that lingers in the mind. The effects of trauma can catch us in unexpected moments which causes us to fear or avoid certain aspects of our history or present life. Trauma can infiltrate every aspect of daily life, affecting relationships, work, or your sense of self.

The effects of trauma can be experienced as flashbacks, avoidance of things that remind you of the event, fear of connection or vulnerability, persistent anxiety, and negative beliefs about yourself and the world. Your body carries the effects of trauma and it can manifest through a racing heart when you’re triggered by a reminder, a knot in your stomach, tightness in your chest, the desire to run or freeze, and even cutting off feeling physical sensations. Coping with trauma isn’t about forgetting; it’s about finding the strength to reshape your narrative, navigate a path toward healing, and reclaim the peace that was once lost.

EMDR & Treating Trauma

When treating trauma we believe in a total mind and body approach. It is not enough to just work through your thoughts about traumatic events; trauma is stored in your body and it needs its focused healing. In our work with individuals, we use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to achieve total healing. This modality helps to unburden the weight of traumatic memories both in your mind and body, offering a chance to reframe them and foster resilience.

EMDR is a therapeutic technique designed to help individuals process and overcome the emotional impact of traumatic memories. This method aims to alleviate the intensity of emotional reactions tied to traumatic memories, allowing individuals to reshape their perceptions and foster healing, ultimately promoting a sense of empowerment and resilience in the face of trauma. Ultimately, in trauma work, we are not just addressing symptoms or scratching the surface of your traumatic history, we are helping you reclaim a sense of control over your life’s narrative so that you can choose how you move forward, accepting what you have experienced while not letting it determine how you choose to live your life.
